you're right, JMRI is an open source software.
what i've done is create some hardware that run on a specific 'Bus' and use a protocol that can be used by JMRI.
it work so:
[list]JMRI listen to the occupancy detectors continuously
If a change occurs in the detection, message is sent to JMRI
JMRI send then new status to the signals who need to be changed
JMRI go back to listen state, and so on[/list:u]

ps: am looking for decent pictures of diesel storage
or tanks for supplying my diesel trains
nowhere i found really decent photos
if anyone could find pictures place link
not the pictures because they are perhaps copyrighted

the round cistern are they no storage of diesel?
you do not need fuel station,
maybe they are refilled by tankcars ... : -?

Not 100% sure about it, but i think they are buffer between the main tank and the fueling . they are used to pre heat the fuel during the cold period.
they are way to small to be main fuel storage
the tanks high above the post are for storing dry sand for helping the loc not slipping on rail when wet weather and/or haevy train

the 2 towers on the first picture are my sand tower as described
here a little earlier
the rest is fuel storage ....
strange that they do not pose on any track to be able to refuel
on the second picture they have it on every track...
jf you can post the link of the pictures you've found on flickr?
Maybe there are more pictures between the other pictures:???:
