Kadee couplers
Remote uncoupling is difficult to achieve in LEGO. This (poor quality) video shows how Kadee couplers are a possible solution. The couplers have been attached without modification to themselves or to any LEGO parts. The uncoupling magnets are standard LEGO magnets.
The videoshows coupling, then uncoupling, and finally delayed uncoupling.
