Wat is jullie favoriete 12v trein???

Beste Leden,

Na Brickmania was het wat doods op het forum, daarom deze Poll, wat denken jullie dat de mooiste 12v trein is? Ik heb lang getwijfeld tussen de 7740 en 7755, na een hele poos heb ik de 7755, wegens de gewoon fantastische kleurencombinatie van het grijs en rood... Ook de doos is zo mooi en past perfect! Gewoon een pareltje!!

Hi. Best of the season and happy New Year to all. Sorry for posting in English, but I am away from my computer for Christmas and there are no good translator apps for phones yet.

My vote for the most beautiful 12v train isn't on the list, but is locomotive 727 with set 164 carriages. These were to me, the highest achievement of the classic era, complete with minifigs, and a taste of things to come. It was tantalising to see them in catalogues because 12v trains were never sold in Australia before 1980. They also resembled the red trains with yellow lines that operated long distance services from Sydney.

A fan of the blue era, aren't you? 12v was never sold in America but was it sold in Australia in the 80's? Like set 7740, 7730... Do yoj have proof of that? I'm a collector and have by now every '80s 12v train, some 2 of 3 copies of them.

Hi Laurenz.

I love your reviews on youtube. Yes, we had 12v in Australia. I will take a photo of a 3 prong Australian plug on the transformer I bought to operate signals, when I get home.

I had most of the sets from that time. My son has them now. The grey era 12v is far superior in all ways. Stronger track, better remote control switches, more functions and parts fully designed to integrate with the Legoland town system. In the 80's, LEGO never compromised anything, and the system then fixed all the flaws from the original.

The 1970's 12v is less of a complete system, but it is more exotic to me and rare, and has the classic LEGO look. 182 was a hero train for me then. It still is. 7740 was an easy favourite when things changed. I got to see a DB 103 class in real life in front of a TEE train, and you could feel their power standing next to them. It was an exciting set for Lego to do.

I wish I had enough space for all the things I want to do.

Do you still have the original boxes? Want to see how they look like. Bricklink doesn't show regional boxes, however the different catalogs in the eighties. I'm now collecting the 12v mainline, till I have every set 3 times (DK-S-SF, DE-FR-NL and ENG-FR-IT), I also collect all catalogs and servicepacks Sealed, that difficult to find...

The Deutsche Bundesbahn Baureihe (BR) 103 is a wonderfull machine, I have been in Nürnberg in Germany and stood on the prototype machine 103-001 that was in a railyard, just without nothing...

Some say that that machine one of the best and most conforatble machines were in the 80s. In the Lego world I like the 7755 the most. It is a wonderfull train and has a nice build.

Here in Belgium, 12v from the '70s is very easy to find in good condition with the box and is cheap here to find... Normally around 100 EUR with the box.

Anyway, looking forfard to your photos!

I was only allowed to keep pieces of the boxes. I still have the end of the box of 7725. From looking at the internet, the boxes were identical to European sets with 5 languages including English. Only the catalogues were different by having the local language.

In the 1970's they would show pictures of sets like 727 and the 160 series in the catalogues. For the other sets they would have a description. For these prized sets, they would only say "Not available in Australia". I believe it was the same for the UK.

7755 was my fastest loco, and I used it with 7818 and 7819.

I put SNCF stickers on 7745 because it was obviously the TGV, and NS stickers on 7710. We got model train books from Marklin and Fleischmann, so I knew all the European trains from that era as a kid. The trains here were quite advanced in the 1950's, but they gave up in favour of building freeways, so European trains were (and still are) quite exciting by comparison.
